While there is a lot to learn, your effort will be worth it. The thrill of growing your business, the freedom and flexibility to set your own hours, and the possibilities of ever-increasing financial rewards are all wonderful reasons to start your home based business.
We have all heard the old slogans - "Fire Your Boss..",. "Wake up when you have finished sleeping..", ..."make money while you sleep.." Great motivators, but first you have to have a plan to make those things happen, and if you are setting all of this up while you are still in your job, then you need to be really disciplined. So .... Now that you've decided to start your business, you might be wondering "How can I get it off to the strongest possible start?" These tips are all designed to get you off to the right start on Day One. These seven tips will help: Set up a separate working space in your home It doesn't matter if this is a small bedroom, one part of the garage, or a corner of the living room. The important thing is to have some space that you can designate as your working area. This will give you the space and room you need to craft your dream. Make sure that it is a place where you can "go to work" (even if you can do it in your pyjamas and don't have to drive there!). That will be fun for a while and you should reward yourself with those little pleasures. Then, move on and get down to business. Stock your working space with materials. This might sound basic, perhaps, but one underlying element of success is that you have easy access to the tools, materials, and other resources you need. Gathering everything close by also keeps you from wasting time searching for it, so this step can be considered a time management strategy, too. Don't be stingy. Get a good printer, scanner, lots of stationery and all the office supplies you need. Start on Day #1 as you mean to go on. That means you might need to do a bit of pre-planning. These days, a good quality smartphone, tablet, laptop and printer will get you started and on the right track. Define the Parameters of Your Business What days and hours will you work? When will you market? When will you provide services or products to clients? How will you keep all of this straight? Plan, plan and then plan, again. The good news is that you can do this any time you want and when it is convenient. There is a great saying - "The entrepreneur is someone who will work 100 hours a week for himself or herself, so that he (or she) doesn't have to work 40 hours for someone else.." That's probably because there is so much great stuff going through your mind as you get excited about what you can do and realise that nobody is going to say you can't! You can work all the hours you want, and probably will. There is another great saying: .. "if you do what you love, you will never work a day in your life.." (even if you put 100 hours a week into never working that day!) Balance Action with Planning One of the most common pitfalls to successful entrepreneurship is getting too caught up in action without enough planning. Stated another way, this means that you confuse "being busy" with "working on important projects." The best approach is to plan your next couple of goals and then work backwards to create step by step action plans to reach them. Once you have the plan, then it's time to take the action. Whatever you do, don't get caught up in the 'paralysis of analysis'- make decisions, then make mistakes, then make corrections, and don't look back (my Dad told me that the only thing that we do successfully while looking back is rowing a boat - everything else needs forward vision..) Network like Crazy One of the fastest ways to grow any business is to make connections with other people. Be sure to share your passion and enthusiasm with others at every opportunity. Let people know who you are and what you offer. Remember, people can't buy if they don't know you're selling. Attend networking events, guest blog, leave comments on blogs and forums, participate in online and offline discussions, join online groups, etc - whatever it takes. Present a Professional Image If you want to be treated professionally, present a professional image.
Basically, be someone people want to do business with. Automate your business as much as possible Granted, you are just one person (right now) and might have a lot of extra time to take care of all the details. This might work for now, but won't work into the future as you get busier and busier. It's best to set up automatic systems and processes right from the start to free up your time to concentrate on the most profitable activities. Trust good advice, take it and move forward with confidence. These seven tips will get your home business started (and growing) in the right direction. What Do You Think? I am certain that we could have said a lot more in this article. Let's go on with it - what else do you think is important when starting out?
